A Summer Maternity and Family Session in Raleigh NC
There is something so special about photographing a family right before everything changes.
This sweet family is getting ready to welcome another little one, and their maternity session was about so much more than documenting a growing baby bump. It was also about capturing this version of their family, before their newest little love arrives.
And these two big sisters made sure there was no shortage of personality along the way!
Celebrating baby with the whole family
One of my favorite things about family maternity sessions is giving everyone a chance to be part of the experience. Of course, we made time for beautiful portraits of mama and her growing belly, but we also photographed the girls loving on baby, individual moments with each parent, portraits of the girls together, and plenty of the entire family.
Even their fur baby joined us for a few!
Rather than spending the entire session standing and smiling at the camera, we mixed the traditional portraits with lots of movement and interaction (walking together, cuddling, laughing, running, and letting the girls simply be themselves). Those in-between moments are so often the ones that become favorites.

Maternity Photos That Feel Like Your Family
Maternity photography doesn't have to mean an elaborate gown or a session centered entirely around posing.
For families who already have children, I love approaching maternity sessions as a combination of maternity and family photography. We can still create beautiful portraits that celebrate pregnancy while also documenting the relationships that surround this new baby.
Big siblings get to snuggle the belly. Parents get a few moments together. Kids can run, laugh and play. And somewhere in between all of that, we capture what life actually felt like during this season.
Because someday, these girls will look back at these photographs and see just how little they were while they were waiting for their new sibling to arrive.
And I think that's pretty special.
