Tips from a Raleigh-Based Family Photographer

Fall is one of the most magical times of the year to capture family memories. The crisp air, golden light, and vibrant leaves create the perfect setting for timeless photos. If you’ve booked (or are thinking of booking) a Fall Mini Session this year, here are some simple tips to help you make the most out of it — from timing and styling to mindset and preparation.

1. Book Early for the Best Selection

Fall mini sessions are incredibly popular — especially in North Carolina where the leaves don’t stick around forever! Booking early gives you:

  • First dibs on prime dates (especially weekends)

  • Your preferred time of day (think golden hour!)

  • Access to the best location for your family’s needs — whether that’s a park with easy parking or a riverside backdrop that lets your kids run free.

Tip: If you have younger children, consider booking an earlier time slot to avoid that late afternoon crash. If your kids are older or you love that dreamy golden light, late afternoon might be perfect.

2. Keep Leaf Timing in Mind (But Don’t Stress It!)

Fall color in North Carolina can be absolutely breathtaking — but predicting the exact peak is always a little tricky. Weather, rainfall, and temperature shifts all play a role in how and when the leaves change. That said, for central NC (including the Raleigh area), the last week of October through the first two weeks of November typically offer the best chance at vibrant foliage. Even if the leaves aren’t at their peak, the fall light, color palettes, and cozy wardrobe choices still create stunning imagery that feels seasonal and timeless.

3. Plan Your Outfits Thoughtfully

Coordinating outfits can elevate your photos — but you don’t need to match perfectly. Here’s what works best for fall:

  • Earth tones like rust, mustard, olive, cream, and warm browns photograph beautifully.

  • Soft textures like knits, denim, linen, and corduroy add depth and coziness.

  • Avoid loud patterns and logos, which can distract from faces and emotion.

  • Layers are your friend — they add visual interest and can be easily added or removed if the weather shifts.

If you're unsure, I always recommend starting with one person's outfit (often mom's!) and building everyone else's looks around that.

4. Think About the Details

Mini sessions are short and sweet, so every little bit of prep helps!

  • Arrive early so you’re not rushed or flustered. This also gives kids time to adjust.

  • Bring snacks or small treats as rewards — just keep them mess-free.

  • Choose comfortable shoes if we’ll be walking a bit to get to the prettiest spot.

  • Mom tip: If you’re planning to wear heels or dressy boots, pack them in a bag and slip them on once you arrive at the photo spot — your feet will thank you!

  • Bring a backup item — whether that’s a clean shirt for a toddler or a neutral blanket to sit on.

5. Relax and Trust the Process

Mini sessions are fast-paced by design — but that doesn’t mean they can’t be meaningful. The best photos come when you’re relaxed and engaged with your family. Let go of perfection and lean into connection: hugs, laughs, eye contact, playfulness. I’ll guide you through poses and natural interactions so you don’t have to worry about what to do.

6. Make It a Memory, Not Just a Session

Why not turn your session day into a little family tradition?

  • Grab donuts or coffee before or after your shoot.

  • Plan a cozy evening with cider and movies afterward.

  • Involve your kids in choosing their outfits or accessories so they feel excited.

Those little rituals make the day more special — and your photos will forever remind you of that shared experience.
